BLACK STUFF - a few casual conversations that Alexander had with fellow writer/actor and poet LeVan D. Hawkins, about the ways in which assumptions about them because they are black men (from both white and black people) have impacted thier lives, developed into a two-man show. It's a farce; a laugh out loud satirical look at blackness described as "A trip through the murky labyrinth of black identity". It permiered at Higways Performance Space, was workshopped at New York Theater Workshop and was presented last August at the National Black Theater Festival in North Carolina before doing a run in October at The Kitchen Theater in Ithaca. OTHERS WITHIN - A new play exploring the lives of Blacks living in Nazi Germany. When Alexander Thomas began researching the lives of Blacks living in Germany during the Hitler years as a possibility for a 10 minute theater piece, which was to be included (along with 7 other solo pieces, each 10 minutes long) on a bill titled NOT ABOUT ME at Highways Performance Space, he didn’t know what to expect, and did not expect much. When to his surprise he discovered not only that there were some estimated 20,000 to 25,000 Blacks (many as citizens born and raised) in Germany at that time, and that there was also (albeit not well known) a wealth of information already written on the subject, he was inspired to create a full theater piece out of the material.
A ten 10 minute verison of Others Within was performed at Highways June 3-5 and June 24th at The Powerhouse Theater in a benefit show for the Bike Out Organization. Work on Others Within continued on it's journey with a staged reading at London's Oval House Theatre (London, England) on 10th of December 2005 as part of their to follow the development of Others Within click Anatomy of a Work in Progress
Alexander recently played various roles in the workshop production of On The Waterfront at The Hackney Empire Theatre in London, UK directed by Steven Berkoff
